I'm actually quite shocked, seeing as there are some D&D mentionz up in hurr. :(

So if we got any 40K N3rds in here, what race do you field? Talk about some past games you played over the week/weekend, elaborate on how your 1337 Necrons can move and shoot. :/

And yes, I am referring to the table-top wargame, not the PC RTS series (or the upcoming third person shooter which looks to be pwnsauce). To start it off, I play Space Marines and I am currently saving up for that oh so delicous Space Marine Strike Force box set. Vanguard Marines make me hawt. >.>

P.S. One of my favorite things at PAX was watching the minis nerds walking around with their big-ass case thingies, ready to throw down. Like, these cases were so unwieldy and so heavy and obviously so annoying to carry around, but you could tell these dudes would have carried ten times as much if they had to, in order to throw down with the righteousness. Minis nerds rule.

My mid-youth money sink of choice was Hassle: the Dorkening.

Or something like that.

Never tried the miniatures.

Warhammer is not really any harder, just more EXPENSIVE. That being said I have 5000 points worth of Ultramarines.

Do Warhammer 40K players look down on Warhammer Fantasy Battle players?

I think a lot of the minis are way lamer looking, but the people playing are cool. Especially since they could really easily learn to play a real game, like 40k.(jk)

I have a 3000 point Ultramarines (which I use more now because of those sexy Vanguard and Sternguard Veterans) army and a 1500 point Space Wolves (I'm hoping for new models) army <3. It's so hard to find a Smurf fan nowadays, everyone's all for Blood Angels, Space Wolves and the other Chapters. How can you not like the boyz in blue? :(

Not at all bro. In fact, I still remember the days when Fantasy and 40K theoretically enhabited the same universe.

I enjoyed D&D as a casual game too be honest. I really love 40K not just for the game, but for the paiting and modelling of the minis. It's kind of fun, but gets super freaking expensive.

Ultramarines have always been my favorite chapter, they're just good at everything. Plus they have some of the most interesting backstory and novels out.

I actually used to paint Space Marines and Space Orks, I just wasn't brave enough to play the game more than once. I used to have a lot of White Dwarf (?) magazines around... mine didn't look like that.

The new Ultramarines novel came out actually. I've yet to read it, but I am very interested in seeing what happened to Uriel after he escaped Medrengard.

The gaming aspect of it is fun, but I really like the painting and modelling aspect of it more than anything else.

I used to be well into it. Over the past year my interest has declined somewhat, although I still paint and have won a few competitions in my local area. I actually live a bus journey away from Warhammer HQ :) envy me!
One reason for my disengagement is the price, which is steadily climbing, and also that they are putting too much emphasis having to buy a silly amount of models to battle. I enjoyed it when it was a few squads, maybe 500 or 1000 points of 40k. Never really massively got into fantasy but the models are nice.

I completely agree with your statement regarding the increase of price in the models lately. I'm currently saving to build a new computer, and I really can't afford to keep up with the game as I want to. I managed to acquire three Drop Pods for my Space Marine orbital strike force, but I still need a Dreadnought Drop Pod and a Deathwind Pod as well.

Just in the last six months, I've spent about 250 dollars on additional models for my standing force. And that's just the enhancement options that are covered in the new rulebook edition (like the Vanguard Marines/Sternguard Marines box sets I picked up). Sure Apocalypse games look nice, but unless I combine my current forces into one, or play with a friend on my team I can't field a 5,000 point force.

It just goes to say, that GW has become more unreasonable as of late with their prices. So, after my last Drop Pod purchase (2 months ago), I've decided to stop buying models for a couple of years. I'll just "retrograde" my force if new rules or updates come out. Saves me money and time on my force construction.

Exactly, that is what we have done. They are bringing out am 'apocalypse' for LoTR, but my friend and I are going the opposite way and playing with about 10 models each. Same with 40k, we have gone back to things like Necromunda, small skirmishes, Space Hulk with edit rules and 40k scale Inquisitor.
I wish there were more like us who refuse to pay the extortionate prices. Of course they are being hit with the crunch, but they seem to forget that we are too.

I know of the looming credit crunch hitting the U.K. mainland hard, it's not easy for us in the States either. But even before economic issues plagued our financial departments, it was still priced at absurd rates. In the end, they want me paying 50 dollars for a 4-inch tall piece of plastic? Yeah right.

Hell, as you mentioned. The War of the Ring expansion is just another cheap way to acquire more money, for more useless shit. For every awesome thing GW does, they take 2-steps back with price increases. =_='

Tbh I would advise this: get crafty with your bits box: start a mutant force. check on Ebay for cheap stuff and play the only game systems. One system worth a crap load of fun and little money is Bloodbowl
